La Bocana
This region is best known for it's great surf! After surfers discovered this region
and started competing here in 2003, its popularity has grown tremendously. La Bocana
beach is about a 15 minute drive east of Santa Cruz (10 minutes from Tangolunda)
and costs about $6-8 for a taxi ride from the resort area.
Where to Find Accommodations: Boasting one of the only beachfront
villa rentals in the entire Huatulco region, La Bocana offers a true "beach lovers"
vacation! Check our Bocana rentals off the homepage to view availability and seasonal
pricing.
Where to Find the Surfing Rollers: Near the mouth of the Copalita
River, a long stretch of beach complete with powerful surfing waves stretches for
at least a mile to the east. In addition to this section, you can check out other
areas in the region including: Puerto Escondido and Salina Cruz.
Where to go for lessons: In addition to some of the more expert
surf areas of this beach, there are also sections that are ideal for those just
learning how to surf. Located within one of the beachfront palapa restaurants is
s a surf school run by Adam Boulton. Board rentals will run you about $14 USD/day
and the beginner lesson is about $35-40 USD/lesson.
Prepare yourself for a serious core body workout and a few Coronas at the end of
the day!
Water Conditions:
The waves are pretty rough at La Bocana, making it difficult for children to play
in the ocean. However, as long as you're careful, some sections are fine. There
is also a little inlet at the mouth of the river where kids can splash around.
Other activities at La Bocana: One of the most unique and reasonably
priced experiences available at this beach is the Natural Mud Bath experience! For
only about $5 US/person you can enjoy a mud massage! The process begins with the
experience of being covered from head to toe in mud taken from the nearby river.
Once covered, you wait in the sun while the mud dries. The local women running the
mudbaths then massage the mud off your skin and you finish up with a cleansing dip
in the Pacific to wash off any remnants. It is truly a fun and memorable vacation
experience - for five bucks, definitely worth a half hour of your time!
